Poverty Point National Monument
Located in northern Louisiana near Delhi, the Poverty Point National Monument represents one of North America’s earliest earthworks and archeological sites. Thought to be over 3,000 years old, Poverty Point contains over 400 acres of earthworks and artificial mounds – officially named a National Monument due to its regional historical significance.
Visitors can take guided tours, visit interpretive museums, and hold special events at the monument. Specific must-see sites include the Dunbar Mound, Bird Mound, and Ballcourt Mound – each are available for hiking and viewing year round.
