Cathedral of St. John

Best Things to Do in Lafayette

Communities all across Cajun Country are brimming with culture, history, and, perhaps more importantly, some of the best cuisine this side of the Mississippi.

The city of Lafayette is no stranger to all of the above. So if you’re planning a visit to the "Hub City," here are the best things to do in Lafayette:

See the Sites.

It might be a little touristy, but you’d be remiss not checking out the nearly 200-year old Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist during your visit to "Heart of Cajun Country."

Likewise, Vermilionville, a recreated Acadian village, offers up a ton of historical context and new things to discover. Explore the historic village, check out the living history museum, tour the homes, and grab a bite at the on-site restaurant.

Eat, eat & eat.

Louisiana is known for its food; that much is for sure. But if you’re not too familiar with Cajun cuisine, we recommend scheduling a tour with Cajun Food Tours; let expert guides help you discover what makes this stuff so special.

Cajun Gumbo

But of course, you’re more than welcome to chow down on your own accord. Start downtown, primarily on Jefferson Street, where a ton of the city’s best restaurants line the sidewalks.

Best fest in Lafayette.

Planning an April adventure? Well then plan your visit accordingly, and be a part of this year’s Festival International de Louisiane.

The annual festival draws hundreds of thousands of visitors, taking part in a number of cultural festivities and live entertainment.

Learn something new.

Part of what makes Cajun Country such a unique place to visit is the way it celebrates cultural heritage.

You’ll see what we mean after visiting the Acadian Cultural Center, a cozy museum commemorating the region’s Acadian settlers.

If you have some curious little learners in tow, then make plans to explore the Children’s Museum of Acadiana. The museum is filled to the brim with interactive exhibits covering everything from science to history to food.

Best Things to Do in Lafayette

Luscious Lake Martin

Get outdoors.

Albeit a short drive from Lafayette, Lake Fausse Pointe State Park covers 6,000 acres of southern LA scenery, offering excellent hiking trails, canoe trails, picnicking, and more adventure.

Just outside of Lafayette, the Lake Martin Rookery offers excellent wildlife viewing along its lakeside path – keep your eyes peeled for vibrant birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

For a more in-depth swamp adventure, schedule a Cajun Country Swap Tour, and prepare to get up-close-and-personal with the gators of Lake Martin.

Nightlife.

While it may not have the worldwide reputation it’s NOLA neighbor does, Lafayette isn’t a novice when it comes to partying. Just checkout downtown, where joints like Marley’s, Nitetown, and City Bar Downtown serve as local favorites.

Elsewhere, Randol’s Seafood Restaurant is the home for live music in Lafayette – seven days a week. Likewise, Blue Moon Guest House & Saloon invites visitors to put on their dancing boots just about every night of the week.
