Best Things to Do in Monroe

Affectionately known as the “Twin Cities of northeast Louisiana,” the metro area formed by Monroe and West Monroe is bursting with southern culture and heritage, and ripe for a visit.

So plan your northern LA trip today and mark your itinerary accordingly – here are the Best Things to Do in Monroe.

Learn something new.

If you’re looking to discover Monroe, don’t miss the Biedenharn Museum and Gardens, set in Monroe’s scenic Garden District along the Ouachita River.

If you have some curious little learners in tow, then make your way to the Northeast Louisiana Children’s Museum near the Downtown Monroe Historic District.

Shop local.

Best Things to Do in Monroe

Downtown Monroe

A local favorite, the Rivermarket is a one-stop for culture, cuisine, live music, and more, all as a part of the Downtown Rivermarket Festival, which runs for nine months.

As if that wasn’t enough, check out the Market at 7th Square for even more local Monroe flavors, including fresh produce, baked goods, vegetables, and more.

Get outdoors.

Enjoy that Louisiana sunshine at Chennault Park, a 500-acre urban paradise featuring everything from walking trails and picnic areas, to the 18-hole Chennault Park Golf Course.

Set along the Ouachita River in downtown Monroe, Forsythe Park houses a handful of ball courts, baseball diamonds, a nine-hole golf course, and plenty of wide-open space and green grass.

Have a drink.

If you’re ready to let loose, check out some of Monroe’s favorite downtown watering holes, like Live Oaks Bar & Ballroom, Corner Bar, Enoch’s Irish Pub & Café, and many others.

Or, for a little after dark fun and games, check out Bayou Bowl on the north side of town, or head over to West Monroe and show off you corner-pocket game at Arena Billiards Bar and Grill.

Black Bayou Wildlife Refuge

See a show.

For a slightly more tame evening, see what the Louisiana Opera at University of Louisiana at Monroe has up their sleeves.

For fans of performance arts, the Twin City Ballet comes highly recommended, as they put on some of the most vibrant and unique shows in town.

Get wild.

Get a little exercise, get outdoors, and discover nature in just one stop at the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo, home to over 1,200 species of native and non-native species.

For a slightly more wild animal experience, explore the Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge, covering a whopping 4,500 acres of forested swamp and wetlands, crisscrossed by walking trails.
