Visiting Cajun Country
Southern Louisiana is home to the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area, and the wetlands and bayous of Cajun Country. Traversed by Interstate 10 and Louisiana Highway 90 travel to communities across the region is convenient and easy. From Lake Charles in the west across the deltas and waterways to Lafayette, and south to Morgan City and Galliano, Cajun hospitality, cuisine and tradition reign – travel Louisiana Cajun County and discover the rich heritage and culture.
Labor Day Weekend in Morgan City, the community celebrates it’s role as a gateway to southern Louisiana’s shrimp and petroleum industry. The 2013 Louisiana Shrimp & Petroleum Festival is August 29th through September 2nd in downtown Morgan City. Live music fills Lawrence Park featuring a mix of Zydeco, Cajun and County artists; the Children’s Village keeps the kid’s entertained; and over 100 artisan booths display handcrafted arts and crafts. Make Morgan City’s Shrimp and Petroleum Festival the unofficial end to summer.
Thirty miles east of Morgan City near the town of Gray, fall brings the Best of the Bayou Festival to Houma. The free two-day 2013 festival takes place September 28th and 29th in historic downtown Houma. New for 2013 is the Best of the Bayou Cocktail Contest. With live music, great food, and arts & crafts it’s a full weekend of fun in Houma.
The community of Galliano, an hour south of Gray celebrates the season September 21st and 22nd at the 2013 Golden Meadow Family Fishing Rodeo. Join the fun at Golden Meadow Oak Ridge Park – along with fishing the festivities include music, food, car & bike show. Enjoy traditional Cajun Country fun in Galliano.
Film buffs put Lake Charles, 30 miles from the western Louisiana state line, on the calendar for the beginning of fall. October 4th & 5th brings the 2013 Lake Charles Film Festival to southern Louisiana. Guest of honor, actor and indie filmmaker Jackson Bostwick, presents the workshop: "Keep It Simple… The Indie Filmmaker's Pit Falls".
Celebrate the spirit of the holidays in Lafayette at one of Cajun Country’s top December events. Lafayette’s A Cajun and Creole Christmas fills the 2013 December calendar with festive holiday fun.
