Visiting Cajun Country

Winter doesn’t mean quite the same thing in Cajun Country as it does in much of the rest of the country – but that’s not to say the landscape isn’t a wonderland. This season, mild weather means fun outdoors never stops and communities from Abbeville to Eunice to Galliano invite visitors to join them in celebrating the season, hosting a variety of special events, festivals, and family-friendly activities.

Beautiful weather means golfers can tee off all season long, and Cajun Country is home to countless first-rate golf courses. Golfers visiting Vinton and Lake Charles aren’t far from Frasch Park Golf Course in Sulphur. To the east, players in Lafayette can get a round in at the Wetlands Golf Course.

Fashionistas flock to the Franklin Recreation Center in Franklin on January 16th. The 7th Annual Rock the Runway Fashion & Talent Show sends models down the catwalk wearing this season’s latest styles and trends, benefiting the Lydia Cancer Association. Be there early to save your seat – the show starts at 6 p.m.

Of course, New Orleans is best known for its epic annual Mardi Gras celebration, but Fat Tuesday fun can be found all over the state in early February. Take the 2016 Krewe of Amani Mardi Gras Parade in Patterson, for instance. Franklin visitors are just minutes away from the procession, which traverses downtown Patterson beginning at 2 p.m.

Nature lovers visiting Morgan City won’t want to miss a chance to see our nation’s most famous bird in person, February 24th through 27th. The 11th Annual Eagle Expo features presentations on the American bald eagle, as well as other wildlife, flora, fauna and the culture of the area by wildlife professionals and photographers. But the focal points of the events are the boat tours into various waterways to view the eagles’ nests and breeding grounds.

When spring finally arrives, Franklin and Patterson celebrate with the 26th Annual Cypress Sawmill Festival. Head to Kemper Williams Park, April 1st through 3rd, to find out why the annual favorite is a five-time winner of Louisiana’s Festival of the Year honors. The fun includes live music, carnival rides and games, and more.
