Visiting Central Louisiana

Louisiana’s oldest city, Natchitoches, celebrates its 300th birthday in 2014. Look for Natchitoches Tri-Centennial events the second Saturday of each month. Events include tributes to the Louisiana sports Hall of Fame and the Northwest History Museum in June, a celebration of Louisiana Heritage in July, and Art in August, marking the end of summer. Discover the rich culture and heritage of the Bayou State as you explore Central Louisiana.

The 19th Annual Natchitoches Jazz & R&B Festival is spring 2014’s premier music event. The Natchitoches Riverfront fills with the sounds of jazz, soul, and country music April 4th and 5th. Historic downtown Natchitoches and Cane River Lake are the ideal backdrop for a weekend of great music.

The Natchitoches area Jaycees liven Louisiana’s hot summer with the 2014 Cookin’ on the Cane BBQ Festival June 6th and 7th. The festival is held on the Natchitoches riverbank, featuring events for professional and non-professional cooks. Join family and friends downtown for summer fun, food, and entertainment.

Northwestern State University of Louisiana hosts the 2014 Natchitoches-NSU Folk Festival July 18th and 19th. The 35th annual event celebrates the folk heritage of Natchitoches and the city’s 300th year. Musical legends Al Ferrier and Jo-El Sonnier perform, along with food, traditional crafts, and the Louisiana State Fiddle Championships.

Leesville and Vernon Parish celebrate spring and upcoming summer at Mayfest 2014. One of the Bayou State’s longest running events, Mayfest is held in the Leesville Historic District. Featuring arts and crafts, live entertainment, and local delicacies, 2014 Mayfest is the weekend of May 3rd and 4th. The Leesville Lions Club kicks off the festivities with a pancake breakfast, followed by events including the Gospel Tent and armadillo stampede.

Louisiana culture and heritage is alive and well in DeRidder. The Beauregard Parish Civic Center includes a covered arena hosting area rodeo, flea markets, and fairs. DeRidder High School's 2014 Rodeo competition is May 2nd through 4th; BPCC hosts the 2014 Cajun Little Britches Rodeo over Memorial Day weekend May 23rd through 25th; and the DeRidder Riding Club hosts Jackpot, Barrels & Poles various weekends including Labor Day Weekend.
