Visiting Central Louisiana
Summer sees the people of central Georgia taking to the outdoors. Virtually endless opportunities for adventure await in wooded wonderlands like Kisatchie National Forest; the weather's right for golfing, fishing, and baseball; and communities from Alexandria to Natchitoches to St. Francisville are gearing up for more special events, festivals, and family-friendly fun than any other time of year.
Anglers can reel in big catches of a variety of fish species at central Louisiana's numerous prolific fishing holes before it gets too warm. This spring and early summer, head to Toledo Bend Reservoir, part of South Toledo State Park near Leesville and De Ridder, where two boat launch ramps and a fishing pier extend over the crystal-blue waters, yielding opportunities to catch largemouth bass, bream, catfish, and more.
Summer sunshine means it's time to get back out on the links, and central Louisiana is home to numerous top-flight golf courses. Oak Wing Golf Course is a go-to for players in Alexandria, golfers in Natchitoches have Northwestern Hills Golf Course, among others, and, the Warrior Hills Golf Course in Fort Polk is worth the short drive for visitors and residents of Leesville and De Ridder.
The Alexandria Zoo celebrates its 90th birthday with Zoo Day 2016 on June 11th, welcoming families with free admission, along with cake and special, guided tours.
As summer cools down, Alexandria comes alive – or rather becomes undead. The 2016 Alexandria Zombie Walk is October 22nd, inviting visitors and residents to construct their best zombie costume and stroll through downtown Alexandria in a brains-hungry hoard. The night of living dead starts when the sun goes down – around 5 p.m.
If it's the finer things you're after, don't miss the Van Gogh Gala 2016. It's an evening of art displays, food, and entertainment celebrating the life, work, and lasting influence of Vincent Van Gogh at the River Oaks Square Art Center in Alexandria, starting at 7 p.m.
