The Cajun Country area of Southern Louisiana is home to many fine universities. The University of Louisiana at Lafayette was established in 1898 as Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute. The university changed names two additional times, before the current name was finalized in 1999. The university was the first college of all the Southern states in America, to admit African-American students in 1954. Students attending the university have a choice to pursue undergraduate degrees from 78 different programs, master's degrees from a variety of 27 programs and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from 8 programs.
The university's beautiful campus encompasses 137 acres of land, in the heart of Lafayette.
