Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, completed in 1821 in downtown Lafayette, is the first church in the Lafayette Parish. This historic Roman Catholic cathedral features stained glass windows portraying the life of Saint John the Evangelist, fourteen Stations of the Cross lining the walls and statues of saints in shrines in the Cathedral. The St. John Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Lafayette.

Lafayette Regional Airport

The Lafayette Regional Airport was established in 1930 as the Lafayette Municipal Airport. The 848-acre airport began with a wooden hangar and was used as a pilot training airfield by the United States Army Air Forces, during World War II. Over the years, the airport has grown to 1,116-acres. Lafayette Regional Airport provides air travel services for approximately 400,000 travelers in the Cajun region of Southern Louisiana, each year.

University of Louisiana at Lafayette

The Cajun Country area of Southern Louisiana is home to many fine universities. The University of Louisiana at Lafayette was established in 1898 as Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute. The university changed names two additional times, before the current name was finalized in 1999. The university was the first college of all the Southern states in America, to admit African-American students in 1954. Students attending the university have a choice to pursue undergraduate degrees from 78 different programs, master's degrees from a variety of 27 programs and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from 8 programs.

The university's beautiful campus encompasses 137 acres of land, in the heart of Lafayette. While in Southern Louisiana, be sure to stroll the campus to see the oaks trees planted in 1900 and the "Walk of Honor" path showcasing the 80,000 bricks imprinted with the names of the students, that have graduated since 1903. Support the student athletes, the Louisiana Rajun Cajuns, during one of the many sporting events in the Sun Belt Conference.
