Atchafalaya National Heritage Area

Opened in 2006, the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area is found in the Louisiana Plantation Country just west of Baton Rouge. The area covers over 14 parishes, featuring a variety of Cajun cultural sites and excellent things to do.

The area runs from Baton Rouge to Alexandria and back down through Lafayette. Visitors will find plenty of outdoor recreation, culture, history, and must-sees throughout the heritage area. Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport

Located north of Baton Rouge, the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport began as the Harding Army Air Field. During World War II, the United States Army Air Force used the Air Field for supplies and as a place to perform maintenance on the aircraft.

The 1,250-acre airport, featuring three runways, is used for general aviation, commercial flights, and military use. Travelers starting their journey from Baton Rouge, have the option to fly to Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Memphis, and Charlotte, via four commercial airlines.

Capitol Park Museum

Measuring in at nearly 70,000 square feet, Capitol Park Museum is a recent addition to the Capitol Park and Louisiana State Capitol area in Baton Rouge. The museum most notably features an authentic Civil War submarine raised from Lake Pontchartrain.

Spread across two floors, other museum must-sees include exhibits documenting everything from Louis Armstrong to Mardi Gras to Jim Crow. The museum features two permanent exhibits, as well as a variety of rotating exhibits and special events focusing on culture and history in Plantation Country.

Louisiana Art & Science Museum

Nestled neatly in downtown Baton Rouge in the heart of Plantation Country, the Louisiana Art and Science Museum is a fun-filled museum complex fit for visitors of all ages. The museum houses a host of permanent exhibits, including Ancient Egypt, Solar System, and Universe Gallery.

Visitors are encouraged to take in a show at the museum planetarium – shows range from Flight of the Butterflies to Lewis & Clark Great Journey West. Plan your visit accordingly and stop in on one of the many events, like Far-Out First Friday, and the rotating exhibits. 

Louisiana State Capitol Building

Completed in 1932, the Louisiana State Capitol Building in Baton Rouge is the tallest capital building in America.

The 450-foot, 34-story limestone building was constructed by recommendation of Huey Long, who became governor during its completion.

After the completion, he was fatally wounded in the building and is buried and memorialized in the Capitol Gardens.

The building was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1982 and is a staple of plantation country.

LSU has the largest student population of all of the higher education institutions in Louisiana with 21,000 students.

Athletics are well represtented at LSU, collectively known as the LSU Tigers, fielding 21 NCAA Division I varsity teams.

The Tigers football team has won multiple National Championships, playing home games Tiger Stadium in plantation country.

Old Louisiana State Capitol Building

Once home to the Louisiana State Legislature, the Old Louisiana State Capitol is located in downtown Baton Rouge in the heart of LA’s Plantation Country. A National Historic Landmark, the building preserves the state’s early history with a slew of historic exhibits and must-see architecture.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the “Louisiana Castle” and check out the award-winning “Ghost of the Castle” exhibit show, as well as the dazzling stained glass windows and ceilings. Check out area highlights – the Louisiana Arts and Science Museum and Shaw Center are within walking distance.

Port Hudson State Historic Site

Named a National Historic Landmark in 1974, the Port Hudson State Historic Site preserves fortifications and artillery from the Siege of Port Hudson during the American Civil War. The site is located just south of St. Francisville in LA’s Plantation Country.

Highlights within the site include the Port Hudson Peace Monument, the collection of artillery, and six miles worth of trails crisscrossing the site. Be sure to visit both the on-site museum and Port Hudson National Cemetery for more info, or take in a Port Hudson reenactment. 

Shaw Center for the Arts

Opened in 2005, the Shaw Center for the Arts is a performing arts center and museum located in downtown Baton Rouge in the heart of Plantation Country. Formerly known as the Art Block, the center features both the LSU Museum of Art and LSU School of Art Glassell Gallery.

Also on-site is the Manship Theatre – a 325-seat performing arts venue showcasing theater, concerts, musicals, film, and more. Other facility highlights include several restaurants, the New Venture Theatre, and the River Terrace available for event rentals.

Southern University and A&M College

Located in Louisiana’s historic Plantation Country, Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge is a public, four-year institution. The flagship university offers over 44 bachelor degrees, 24 master's, and six doctoral.

The 512-acre campus features academic buildings like John C. Cade Library, J.S. Clark Administration Building, Rodney G. Higgins Hall for Social Science, and much more. Athletics are ever-present, featuring the Southern Jaguars and Lady Jaguars competing in numerous NCAA Division I programs in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Tiger Stadium

Opened 1924, Tiger Stadium is the home field of the Louisiana State University Tigers football team. Seating over 100,000 fans, the stadium is one of the largest and loudest in all of the NCAA and the Southeastern Conference.

The stadium is located on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. Plan your visit to Plantation Country accordingly, and be there when the Tigers take on hated rivals, the University of Alabama Crimson Tide.
