Visiting Greater New Orleans
Summer - an ideal time for a visit to New Orleans. Take a stroll down St. Charles Avenue or hop on the Saint Charles streetcar for a look at pristine examples of 19th century architecture. Visit Besthoff Sculpture Garden, on five acres in the Lakefront neighborhood, to see the world-class collection of sculptures set among the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden. The New Orleans Botanical Gardens at City Park are also a nice option for outdoor activities. Spring’s Tennessee Williams Festival, the French Quarter Festival and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival prime the Crescent City for even more summer fun.
Start summer off in New Orleans celebrating local music and food. Called the Vieux To Do, June’s calendar features three popular festivals. The 2012 French Market’s Creole Tomato Festival, celebrating the common ingredient to Cajun fare. The New Orleans French Market hosts the Creole Tomato Festival June 9th and 10th, with chef demonstrations, live music and lots of creole tomatoes for sale.
All wrapped up into one weekend of festivities, the Cajun & Zydeco Festival and the Louisiana Seafood Festival join the Creole Tomato Festival, for a full weekend of events and activities. The US Mint in the French Market hosts’ local restaurants with samples of New Orleans’ best seafood delicacies. The Cajun & Zydeco Music Festival provides two stages of live music along with a craft fair. Doesn’t get better than three festivals in one weekend featuring Louisiana’s best food and music.
New Orleans celebrates women at June’s 2012 FestiGals. Held over the June 22nd to 24th weekend, this year’s guest speaker is Today Show co-host, Hoda Kotb. FestiGals' commitment is to entertain and enrich women. Join friends in New Orleans for seminars, city tours and workshops designed to empower today’s women.
Triple-A baseball’s Zephyrs entertain NOLA visitors throughout the summer. Enjoy America’s favorite pastime at Shrine on Airline – Zephyr Field, watching New Orleans Zephyr Baseball. The 2012 season runs through September 3rd. Football fans are also in luck summers in New Orleans, AFL’s New Orleans VooDoo fill New Orleans Arena with the excitement of football.
Celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2012, Tales of the Cocktail fills New Orleans with events for cocktail mixologists, professionals, and enthusiasts. Tales of the Cocktail 2012 is July 25th through the 29th, featuring a hand-shaken daiquiri competition, street food and go-cups, and specific Tales of the Cocktail excursions. Enjoy dinners, tastings and competitions, and remember to drink water, eat often and wisely, and use the spit buckets – there are a lot of exciting cocktails to sample.
An ideal end to summer, the New Orleans Seafood Festival brings Lafayette Square in downtown New Orleans to life. Held mid-September, the Crescent City’s Seafood Festival benefits the Louisiana Hospitality Foundation. Visit and dine on seafood prepared by the city’s most popular restaurants. Browse artists booths for jewelry, woodwork and textiles, check out the souvenirs and dance to the music of NOLA’s top performers.
