Visiting Greater New Orleans

Greater New Orleans is ready for 2013 spring and summer travelers. The Mahalia Jackson Theater hosts Broadway touring performances of Wicked through May. Treat yourself to ticket and launch your summer with style in New Orleans. A swamp tour is a must for travelers to New Orleans and the popular Bayou Segnette State Park near Westwego is a great launch pad for a bayou excursion. Be sure to stop by the Westwego Farmers and Fisheries Market on Saturday mornings. Feel lucky? Travel south from downtown NOLA across the Mississippi River anytime for a visit to Harvey and test your luck at Boomtown Casino.

The New Orleans Botanical Garden continues the 2013 Thursdays at Twilight Garden Concert Series through June. The final concert on the 27th features the Symphony Chorus of New Orleans. Hear the music at the Pavilion of the Two Sisters in the Botanical Garden in City Park.

Our Lady of Prompt Succor School in Chalmette celebrates its Tomato Festival in early May. With St. Bernard Parish’s 2013 Tomato Queen crowned, the celebration of Louisiana’s tomato harvest moves to the French Market just north downtown New Orleans. The 2013 Creole Tomato Festival is June 8th and 9th featuring live music, cooking demonstrations and the Creole Tomato Parade. Celebrate the Pelican States agriculture at the French Market.

To the east of New Orleans, just south of Luling in St. Charles Parish, St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Des Allemands hosts the 2013 Louisiana Catfish Festival June 21st to 23rd. In the heart of the Catfish Capital of the Universe, St. Gertrude’s hosts amusement rides, live bands and games. Food is the main attraction, featuring catfish at its best along with traditional Louisiana fare. For the competitive, join Saturday's 5K or the catfish eating contest.

Lafreniere Park in Metairie is one of Jefferson Parish’s largest and most popular. The spring 2013 Live at Lafreniere Sunset Concert Series features free weekly concerts with the best of local New Orleans talent. Visit the east bank, north of downtown New Orleans, through May 30th for a delightful evening in Lafreniere Park.

The LGBT community bids summer farewell in the New Orleans French Quarter at the Southern Decadence Festival 2013 from August 31st to September 2nd. Called Gay Mardi Gras, Labor Day Weekend is one of the most festive celebrations in the Big Easy.
