Visiting Greater New Orleans | Spring 2015

Spring is emerging in the Crescent City. Now that the Mardi Gras season has come and gone, it’s back to business as usual – but that doesn’t mean we can’t still have fun in New Orleans.

Late April and early May bring the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival – a major event of the Big Easy since 1970. The 2015 Jazz Fest features major players like No Doubt, Elton John, Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga, and The Who. Attendees may also check out the Louisiana Folklife Village – home to the Native American Village – and the many exhibits of the Grandstand area.

Don’t forget shopping in the Congo Square African Marketplace and Heritage Square, or pick up a pine needle basket from the Louisiana Marketplace. And of course you’ll want to try unique Creole fare like Alligator Pie, a Cajun Duck Po-Boy, and Crawfish Bread.

It’s no secret the Gulf Coast can be humid in the summer. Ditch the outdoor itinerary and check out some air-conditioned attractions like Harrah's New Orleans, the National WWII Museum, and shopping at the Outlet Collection at Riverwalk.

This festive city also hosts the annual Satchmo Summerfest – a free music festival happening at the Old U.S. Mint from July 30th through August 2nd. The 2015 Satchmofest commemorates NOLA’s native son, Louis Armstrong, with food, crafts, seminars, films, parades, and of course, live entertainment throughout the French Quarter. Don’t miss Louis Armstrong’s Birthday Party, the Jazz Mass at St. Augustine Church sponsored by the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, and much more.

This summer, take advantage of temperatures come nightfall with walking tours of the Vieux Carré. Check out nighttime carriage tours of Jackson Square, the Gray Line Crescent City Nights Walking Tour, or choose from a slue of ghost, vampire, and voodoo-themed walking tours. Of course, you always have the option of exploring the French Quarter’s colorful nightlife scene – happening most nights along Bourbon Street.

If the New Orleans Pelicans of the NBA are done for the season, then head to Zephyr Field for a baseball game with PCL’s New Orleans Zephyrs in Metairie.
