New Orleans will be lit up and lively the remainder of 2010. Music, food, arts, sports and events fill the streets for a magical holiday season. The Best Western St Christopher Hotel near downtown is offering special Papa Noel room rates during December, making a getaway to the city more affordable than ever. Canal Street will be dazzling with over a million twinkling lights along with; City Park, the French Market 27ft fleur de lis tree and caroling in Jackson Square. New Orleans' official holiday parade the Krewe of Jingle will be the afternoon of December 4th – and these are all free.
Head to Dutch Alley at the French Market after the Krewe of Jingle Parade for the Saint Nicholas Day Fair. The Riverwalk Marketplace is featuring Singing Santa and the Riverwalk Jazz Band through December 24th. A Chanukah celebration at the Riverwalk will feature the lighting of a 12ft menorah. This will be December 5th 2010. NOLA is full of lights and festive holiday events through December and the 2011 New Year celebrations.
New Orleans musical traditions don't stop during the holidays. The St Louis Cathedral across from Jackson Square fills with concerts featuring the music of the holidays and gospel sounds throughout December. The popular St Louis Cathedral Basilica 2010 Annual Christmas Concert is December 19th. Check the events for your favorite gospel choir, jazz musician or group - the historic Cathedral schedule is full of musical entertainment.
The 37th Annual State Farm Bayou Classic brings the excitement of college football to the Crescent City. Plan for a fun football weekend November 26th and 27th. Events are held at the Louisiana Superdome, culminating with the Grambling State University Tigers taking on the Southern University Jaguars. Be sure to see the Battle of the Bands and Greek Show Friday night, and arrive early Saturday for the Fan Festival at Champions Square outside the Superdome. College football excitement continues at the 10th Annual New Orleans Bowl on December the 18th. The New Orleans Saints play their last two regular season games on December 12th against the Rams and January 2nd battling the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The 77th Annual Sugar Bowl Classic with be January 4th, 2011. Football fans, there are some great match-ups this time of year in New Orleans.
The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Foundation hosts the 3rd Annual Treme Creole Gumbo Festival December 11th and 12th, 2010. This is a must-experience event for visitors to New Orleans featuring the traditional jazz music and gumbo that makes the city famous. Get some holiday shopping done as well at the 5th Annual Jazz and Heritage Holiday Bazaar. The bazaar is full of local art, jewelry and furnishings for sale, along with Jazz Fest merchandise.
