Visiting Northern Louisiana
The Shreveport – Bosser City area is a hub of commerce, events and activity for northwest Louisiana. Barksdale Air Force Base is located in the region, serving over 55,000 military and civilian employees in the area. Home of the Mighty 8th Air force and 2nd Bomb Wing, BAFB is a source of pride for the Ark-La-Tex region. Northeast Louisiana is a popular destination for outdoors enthusiasts, hunters and sportsmen. The hub cities of Monroe and West Monroe offer outstanding amenities for travelers to destinations like Chemin-a-Haut State Park north near Bastrop or south to Winnsboro and its charming downtown Patriot Square.
The Rotary Club of Shreveport hosts the 2012 Red River Dragon Boat Festival, September 15th. Events take place at Riverview Park in downtown Shreveport, across Clyde Fant Parkway from the Sci-Port Discovery Center. The festivities for the day begin with Opening Ceremonies followed by a full day of dragon boats racing on the Red River. Join a team, or come out to Riverview Park to cheer on your favorite paddlers at Shreveport’s 4th Annual Red River Dragon Boat Festival.
Shreveport kicks off football season with the 2012 Port City Classic. Independence Stadium provides neutral turf for a showdown between Alcorn State University and Grambling State University, Saturday September 1st. Just north of Interstate 20 in West Shreveport, Independence Stadium is the place on Labor Day weekend. The Stadium is also the location for the 2012 Independence Bowl, on December 28th.
Northern Louisiana is home to the State Fair of Louisiana. In many states a summer event, Shreveport hosts the 2012 Louisiana State Fair, October 25th through November 11th. The Fairgrounds are located off Interstate 20, 3-miles west of downtown Shreveport. Now celebrating its 105th year of festivities, the State Fair of Louisiana brings the fun of the State Fair Carnival, exhibitions of the best of Louisiana livestock and agriculture, and daily elephant and tiger encounter shows. Entertainment includes the PRCA Rodeo November 2nd and 3rd, at Hirsch Coliseum, Louisiana State Cheerleading Championships and the Gospel Music Celebration. Visit Shreveport for all the best of Louisiana.
Monroe and West Monroe are a great destination for the holidays. Northeast Louisiana brings the magic of Christmas with a variety of festive events. November brings the crowning of Little Miss Christmas on the River, at West Monroe’s Antique Alley, followed by the city lighting ceremony. The unique Bawcomville Redneck Parade is back for the sixth year, adding some local humor to West Monroe.
Visit Santa’s Christmas Village with the family at Northeast Louisiana Children’s Museum in Monroe. And don’t miss the 2012 Quachita Independent Bank Christmas Parade, on December 1st.
