Visiting Northern Louisiana

Northern Louisiana is a sportsman’s paradise, however, it's the season to enjoy Mardi Gras parades and festivities. Fat Tuesday is March 4th. The Krewe of Barkus and Meow Mardi Paw Parade at Shreveport's Barnwell Garden & Art Center makes room for pets and their owners. The Krewe of Gemini celebrates 2014 Mardi Gras with the theme "Throw me a Memory Mister" at the Gemini XXV parade. The Krewe of Centaur celebrates the theme Fables, Folklore, and Fairy Tales.

Spring 2014 fun continues with the Battle of the Gumbo Gladiators Cook-Off March 29th. Held at Shreveport’s Festival Plaza, Gumbo Gladiators compete for top honors for the best seafood and non-seafood gumbo, which must be prepared onsite. Proceeds benefit Volunteers for Youth Justice, who also provide judging for the competition.

Mansfield, 36 miles south of Shreveport, celebrates 2014 Memorial Day weekend at the 8th Annual Memorial Day Weekend Cannon Firing and Encampment. Presented by the 4th Louisiana Artillery reenactment group, the events are held at Mansfield State Historic Site, where 180 acres are preserved where the Civil War Battle of Mansfield occurred. Honor Northern Louisiana Civil War History May 24th at Mansfield Historic Site.

Travel east to the communities of Ruston, West Monroe, and Monroe. As fans of the popular TV series Duck Dynasty know, West Monroe is home base for the Robertson family and Duck Commander headquarters. Spring and early summer are great times to visit the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo on Bernstien Park Road in Monroe. The zoo is open year round and exhibits animals indigenous to the Louisiana Purchase area. Spring is the birthing season, and there is nothing cuter than those baby critters.

South of Interstate 20 in Winnfield, April’s Louisiana Forest Festival is the highlight of spring events. Located in the heart of the Kisatchie National Forest, Winnfield is a gateway to the beauty and fun of northern Louisiana’s outdoors. Fish the waters of Saline Lake and Saline Bayou, or enjoy your favorite outdoor recreation in the surrounding forest. If you visit the third weekend in March, don’t miss Uncle Earl’s Hog Dog trials.
