Communities from Bastrop to Mansfield capitalize on the cool temperatures, welcoming visitors with a wealth of family-friendly fun, featuring everything from festivals and fishing to culinary gems and cultural destinations.
History buffs can see Christmas the way it was for Confederate soldiers on December 12th at the Mansfield State Historic Center in Mansfield. The 2015 Silent Night: Christmas 1865 event features unique re-enactments, guided tours of the battlefield site, and more, starting at 6 p.m.
Sports fans know fall is football season in the South, and by the time winter rolls around, the best college teams have already started to separate from the pack. On December 26th, northern Louisiana students and fans from Minden, Mansfield, and beyond gather at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, as two of the best teams from the SEC and ACC conferences go head to head in the 2015 Camping World Independence Bowl.
Before you know it, it’s Mardi Gras season, and communities throughout northern Louisiana celebrate with their own unique traditions. The 2016 Fasching Karneval & Parade is January 23rd in Minden, celebrating Fat Tuesday the way the Germans do. Gather with residents in the downtown area to enjoy German food and entrainment, along with vendors, kids’ activities and more.
Monroe and West Monroe visitors will find the 2016 Krewe of Janus Mardi Gras Parade is more similar to the type of Mardi Gras celebration New Orleans has made famous. On January 30th, portions of Monroe Avenue and Trenton Street come alive with conviviality, filling with music, dancing, and beads as parade floats pass. It all starts at 6 p.m.
