Visiting Northern Louisiana
Summer sees northern Louisiana come alive with all sorts of outdoor fun. Adventures await in the region's parks, the sun is shining on the golf courses, and communities from Bastrop to Mansfield are gearing up for more special events, festivals and family-friendly activities than any other time of year.
Not only are Monroe and West Monroe urban hubs for the region, they're also the perfect base camps for a summer exploration of destinations like Chemin-a-Haut State Park, north near Bastrop, as well as Winnsboro, with its charming downtown Patriot Square.
In Monroe, the Northeast Louisiana Children's Museum is full of educational fun. In addition to permanent exhibits like Health Hall, Bubbleworks, and the Earth Balloon, kids visiting during the summer can be a part of The Reuseum 2016 series, which sees the museum host special workshops inviting youngsters to make crafts, conduct experiments, and more.
On September 17th, head for Columbia Park in Shreveport for the 2016 Highland Jazz & Blues Festival. Check festival listings for scheduled performers as the date draws near – each year, the artists have been bigger and better than the last.
As the summer starts to cool down in Minden, the 2016 Vintage Car Club Shine & Bike Show gears up with all sorts of fun for car guys and gals both young and old. On September 10th, make your way to the Minden Civic Center parking lot to see more than 50 classic and restored Corvettes and other hot rods and antiques. Things rev up around 10 a.m. with awards given out by 2 p.m.
