Visiting Northern Louisiana

Elvis fans get your camera faces ready for the Presley memorial outside the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium – the place where the King made his radio debut. Let the history of Shreveport speak for itself through museums, monuments and Mardi Gras parades like Krewe of Centaur in February and March’s Krewe of Gemini. Shreveport is full of festivities this spring. Located in Northern Louisiana Shreveport is the third largest city in the Bayou State. Located along the Red River, Shreveport is a historical city where visitors enjoy events including the Holiday in Dixie festival or historical sites like the Strand Theatre.

Don’t miss the 2011 Holiday in Dixie held from April 8th through April 17th - the Classic Parade on the 9th, in downtown Shreveport, starts at 5:30 p.m. The Carnival at Festival Plaza is a free event featuring live music from Whiskey Myers and the Benjy Davis Project plus rides, food and games. Purchase a $20 Ride Pass Monday through Thursday for unlimited thrills from 5 p.m. to close. Holiday in Dixie also includes the Neighborhood Block Party Day at the Carnival and the Miss Holiday in Dixie Pageant. Let the good times roll in Shreveport this spring!

History buffs have a full dance card this spring in Shreveport. Waltz through the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum at the State Fair Grounds, it is open daily and admission is free. Experience the history of Louisiana through 18 dioramas made of beeswax. Two-step over to the Spring Street Historical Museum for a glimpse of Shreveport’s beginnings – open free Tuesday through Saturday. Don’t miss other historical highlights including the Louisiana Military Museum and the Mansfield Female College Museum.

No trip to Louisiana is complete without chowing down some Creole and Cajun cuisine. Take on the oyster bar at Bear's Restaurant & Sports Bar on Fairfield Avenue or try anything on the menu at Gumbo Daddy’s on Market Street. Try Big O’s on Captain Shreve Drive – if you’re a fan, they’re known for their catfish. Eat your weight in famous Louisiana crawfish at Gerald Savoie’s on 70th Street. Other delicious spots for Cajun include Ralph & Kacoo’s Seafood on Old Minden Road and Crawdaddy’s Kitchen, owned by former LSU football star Louis Cascio.

Enjoy the Louisiana outdoors with a trip to the Red River and the many surrounding lakes of Shreveport. Take Interstate 220 West for a dip at Cross Lake. Fish for bass, admire the cypress trees, or spend the day at the public Ford Park complete with playgrounds, walking trails and tennis courts.
