Visiting Plantation Country

In Baton Rouge it's the season for football and festivals. Home of Louisiana State University and the Tiger athletics teams, Baton Rouge is geared up for the 2012 football season. Tiger Stadium hosts the season opener Saturday of Labor Day weekend, followed by regular season home games through November 17th. Also home to Southern University, located just west of Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, Baton Rouge SU Jaguar fans fill the stands at AW Mumford Stadium on game days. Fall brings the Greater Baton Rouge State Fair, south of the city October 25 through November 4th, adding the tradition of the fair to the calendar.

Go back in history the first Sunday in October, at the West Baton Rouge Museum's Sugarfest. A celebration of sugar in the culture and heritage of West Baton Rouge Parish, the museum hosts a full day of activities taking visitors back to the days of the sugar plantation. With the museum's historic structures as the setting, enjoy living history demonstrations of the sugar making process along with fun and entertainment.

Baton Rouge hosts the Ultimate Louisiana Party, Saturday October 20th. This 2012 event showcases the best of Louisiana’s roots. Headliner Henry Turner Jr. and Flavor, along with Carlton Pride and other Baton Rouge musicians, keep the party going at North Boulevard Town Square.

As they say in Plaquemine, "Laissez Le Bon Temps Rouler." And this is the season to do it, as the city hosts the 2012 International Acadian Festival. The 44th International Acadian Festival is October 19th through the 21st, at the CM “Mike” Zito Multi-Purpose Center off Highway 75.

After the ribbon cutting and blessing of the grounds to open the festival, events kick off and the carnival rides and games begin. Stake out your spot in downtown Plaquemine, for the Acadian Festival Parade on Sunday, catch the excitement of the Bull Bash and tap your toes along with the live entertainment – it’s a celebration of all things Acadian in Plaquemine.

In the east of Plantation Country, the town of Hammond is a hub of commerce for Tangipahoa Parish. Conveniently located near the intersection of Highway 55 and Highway 12, north of Lake Maurepas, Hammond is home of Southeastern Louisiana University, and it's Lions athletics. With a September 8th home opener for Lion’s Football, cheering fans fill Strawberry Stadium through November 10th's last regular 2012 season home game. Expectations are high for new head coach Ron Roberts for a successful 2012 season.

Take some time out of your holidays in Louisiana Plantation Country for a trail running challenge. Baton Rouge’s Forge Racing hosts the 2012 Thunderbird Trail Half Marathon & Moonlight Trail Run, December 15th and 16th in the Tunica Hills area. Start and finish for the events is West Feliciana Sports Park, 30-miles north of Baton Rouge in St. Francisville. Bring a headlamp for the 6k and 10k moonlight runs and get ready for the challenging course run on the Beast Trail.
