Visiting Plantation Country

Baton Rouge, the heart of Louisiana Plantation Country and the Pelican State capital city, offers travelers rich countryside and a look at authentic Louisiana heritage and culture. Fall in Plantation Country brings the tradition of the Greater Baton Rouge State Fair. The 2013 fair is October 24th through November 3rd. From corn dogs and cotton candy to 4H and FFA exhibits see the best of Louisiana’s Plantation Country at GBRSF.

Another fall tradition in Baton Rouge is game day Saturdays with the LSU Tigers football team. “It’s Saturday Night in Death Valley and here come your Fighting Tigers of LSU” is the cry at Louisiana State University on game day at Tiger Stadium. Joint the excitement of the 2013 season at LSU starting on September 7th. And running through the last home game on November 29th.

Hammond, 50 miles east of Baton Rouge is the place to be on weekends during November and December. The Louisiana Renaissance Festival sets up for entertainment, shows and shopping weekends from November 2nd and 3rd to December 7th and 8th. Make a visit to Ye Royal Village of Albright your holiday tradition, and you may just get some holiday shopping done as well.

Called the soul of the Atchafalaya, Iberville Parish is south and west of Baton Rouge. Plaquemine, the parish seat is a half hour south of Baton Rouge. Plaquemine is the spot to experience the holiday festivities of small town Louisiana. Visit Plaquemine with the family on December 14th for the Children’s Christmas Parade and Festival at Bayou Plaquemine Waterfront Park. Return on December 21st for music, art and activities at the Holly Jolly Christmas Festival at the COPAC Gym.

Runners eat with caution over the holidays – the Louisiana Marathon rolls around early in 2014. Baton Rouge hosts the Louisiana Marathon Weekend January 17th through 19th. The kickoff party headlines Friday events followed by the Advocate Cypress 5K, Kids Marathon and Family Fest on Saturday. Sunday is main event day with the running of the Louisiana Marathon and the half marathon followed by the Finish Festival. Come cheer on runners and celebrate at AZ Young Park and the Louisiana Welcome Center, the start and finish of the race.
