Visiting Plantation Country | Fall 2014

Baton Rouge football and festival season kick off in the fall. The Fighting Tigers at Louisiana State University are in full force, and LSU Tiger Stadium hosts the first home game on September 6th, regular season home games through November 8th, including the excitement of homecoming on the weekend of October 25th. Just west of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, the Baton Rouge Southern University Jaguars can fill the stands at AW Mumford Stadium on game days through November 15th. South of the city, the Greater Baton Rouge State Fair rolls in with great food and amusements October 23rd through November 2nd.

For a taste of history the first Sunday in October, visit West Baton Rouge Museum’s SugarFest 2014. This festival, in its 19th year, celebrates sugar in the culture and heritage of West Baton Rouge Parish. The event features a full day of food, entertainment, and activities taking visitors back to the days of the sugar plantation, with the museum’s historic structures as the setting.

Downtown Baton Rouge hosts the Downtown Saturday Night Concert Series every week, showcasing the best of Louisiana’s roots. Special guest Johnny Midnite and other Baton Rouge musicians keep the party hopping at the Blues Room.

When in Plaquemine this Fall, "Laissez Le Bon Temps Rouler” with games, carnival rides, and fireworks over the Mississippi River. The city hosts its 46th International Acadian Festival from October 17th to the 19th, at Bayou Plaquemine Waterfront Park near the junction of Highway 77 and Highway 1. Watch the Acadian Festival Parade on Sunday morning and tap your toes with live entertainment each evening.

In east Plantation Country, the hub of commerce for Tangipahoa Parish is the town of Hammond. Accessible from the intersection of Highway 55 and Highway 12, north of Lake Maurepas, Hammond is home of the Southeastern Louisiana University Lions and a roaring football season. With an August 30th home opener for Lion’s Football, cheering fans fill Strawberry Stadium through November 15th's last regular 2014 season home game.
