Visiting Plantation Country
Northwest of the Big Easy, Louisiana’s Plantation Country is a bastion of southern hospitality. From Baton Rouge and surrounding communities like Plaquemine and Zachary, to Alexandria, Leesville, and Deridder, in the heart of the state, residents invite late-summer visitors to join in the fun. Festivals, special events, family-friendly fun, and more – there’s something for everyone in the Sugar State this season.
Baton Rouge visitors enjoy convenient access to countless opportunities for outdoor fun. You can practice your swing at Briarwood Golf Club, cheer on the Louisiana State University Tigers at Tigers Stadium when the 2015 football season starts in September, or head east of town on Interstate 10 and check out the Cajun cultural sites of the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area.
Celebrate the old days on September 12th and 13th, when the 2015 Oldies But Goodies Fest takes over the West Baton Rouge Conference Center in Port Allen. Come for the dancing, stay for the classic car show, BBQ cook-off, and live music. The fun starts at 11 a.m. both days.
The skies above Gonzales, just south of Baton Rouge, fill with color on September 25th and 26th. The 2015 Ascension Hot Air Balloon Festival is two days of live entertainment, hot air balloon flights, and children’s activities at Lamar-Dixon Center.
First-time visitors to Creole country won’t want to miss the 2015 Andouille Festival on October 16th. A celebration of Andouille sausage, the longtime Creole culinary staple, the event features live music, a gumbo cook-off, a silent auction, the must-attend jazz brunch, and more. St. John the Baptist Parish in La Place, east of Baton Rouge along I-10, outside of New Orleans and Metairie, is the host site.
As summer wanes and fall ushers in cooler temperatures, it’s fair season in Plantation Country. The 2015 Greater Baton Rouge state fair is October 22nd through November 1st, promising everything from midway rides and games to livestock exhibitions, cooking competitions, pig races, and live entertainment.
