Visiting Plantation Country
Winter is less a cold season in the hearts and minds of the people of Louisiana’s Planation Country than it is a respite from the steamy summer. Mild weather makes this season the best time for countless outdoor activities – this season’s visitors are surrounded by opportunities for everything from fishing and hunting to golf and more.
Even better, communities like Baton Rouge, Plaquemine, Zachary, and Deridder host have enough special events, festivals, and family-friendly fun in store to make your winter or early-spring visit unforgettable.
The French Quarter of New Orleans isn’t the only place for Fat Tuesday fun in southern Louisiana. The 2016 Alexandria Mardi Gras is just as colorful of colorful of a celebration in downtown Alexandria. Join in the fun on February 7th – it’s a day of parades, classic car shows, and plenty of local food offerings.
Mild weather also affords visitors the best opportunity to get out and explore the many facets of Plantation Country personality. Cover the most ground by hopping in the car and embarking on a scenic driving tour. The countryside is arguably at its most beautiful as spring sunshine splashes over its lush, green landscape, and Leesville, Oakdale, and Ville Platte make for ideal stops along the way.
There’s endless fun for Baton Rouge visitors this season – both indoors and out. Hit the green at Briarwood Golf Club, catch NCAA basketball action with the Louisiana State University Tigers at Pete Maravich Assembly Center, or head east of town on Interstate 10 and check out the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area, one of countless cultural focal points in the region.
Before you know it, St. Patricks day is back, and Baton Rouge celebrates with the 2016 Wearin' of the Green Parade. Held March 12th, the annual Baton Rouge favorite brings live bands, beads, and gallons of green beer to the intersection of Hundred Oaks Avenue and the South Arcadian Thruway. Come down early – the all-day fun starts at 10 a.m.
