Visiting Plantation Country
Louisiana’s illustrious history, remembered by the plantation homes still standing, marries distinct Southern heritage with the poise of the people that lived it. Whether you’re visiting Louisiana for the first time, or live in urban Louisiana, touring the area’s plantations and sharing in its rich history is a wonderful trip into the past and America’s heritage. Take the family for a trip to the haunted Myrtle Plantation in St. Francisville for an evening tour, or the River Road African-American Museum in historic Donaldsonville for the “Rural Root of Jazz” exhibit. History buffs of all ages are sure to find heaven in plantation country.
The Oakley House, found at the Audubon State Historic Site, is located in southern St. Francisville off LA 965. This three-story 1806 structure is open daily for tours. Test your nerves with a tour of Myrtles Plantation, said to be one of America’s most haunted houses - built circa 1796, this antebellum structure has both daily historic tours and evening mystery tours. Come hungry, the Carriage House Restaurant offers terrific meals.
The Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site Butler and the Greenwood Plantation are less than an hour from Baton Rouge. If you are looking for a Baton Bouge hotel, the Best Western hotel in the city is convenient for travelers. Guided tours of Rosedown are on the hour, and Greenwood tours are $5 per person. Be sure to take US Hwy 61, also known as the Great Mississippi River Road, from Baton Rouge.
Stop by Lake Charles for the 2011 Black Heritage Festival in mid March. Don’t miss the plates of traditional Louisiana creole cuisine and gospel and blues performances at the Lake Charles Civic Center. Catch the show with rhythm and blues pioneer “The Iceman” Jerry Butler. Stay at the nearby Best Western Lake Charles hotel after your fill of blues and gumbo.
Plantation tours and historic towns are a great way to absorb Louisiana culture. Visit Donaldsonville for the Historic Donaldsonville Museum or stop in for lunch at the Grapevine Café and Gallery with an authentic Cajun menu. Rest up at Best Western’s Plantation Inn, minutes from Ascension Park, home of kid-friendly Jambalaya Park with an Olympic size pool and water fountains.
In Southeastern Louisiana, discover the historic town of Vacherie for the magnificent St. Joseph Plantation. Built around 1830 and located along the Mississippi River, the site offers fascinating guided tours of the 1,000-acre settlement, often given by relatives of the original family. Follow your tour with a picnic lunch under the oak trees, and experience the best of Southern lifestyle. From historic plantation tours and southern family history, to toe-tapping blues and spicy creole flavors, Louisiana offers visitors a unique slice of authentic Americana.
